Advices for a weekend in Rome

To try to think what to do in Rome never supposes a problem. In fact, whenever you turn in a corner the city it seems to astonish you with a new architectural piece: a source hidden here, an ancient piazza there, a baroque church there … And the best thing of everything is that most of this fantastic city can be discovered free.

With so many things for seeing and for doing, the question that many backpackers rise to themselves it is the following one: how can I extract the maximum divided to the city during a weekend and without spending a lot of money? Since here you have it. We present a small handlebar to you to be able to visit Rome in 48 hours.

On Saturday

Let's start with the angels

One of ways simplest of appreciating the splendor of Rome is to go up to the highest part of Castel Sant'Angelo (brought in 7€) and to contemplate a few magnificent conference of 360th. You will be able to see the most important monuments standing out between the roofs; I joust to another side of the river Tiber, the panorama from the Vatican up to the Pantheon and the ruins of the Palatine mount is a real visual spectacle difficult to find in any other part of the world. The proper castle (in fact, it is officially Adriano's Mausoleum) has been an important part of the history and one has turned into a very popular attraction thanks to the book Angels and demons of Dan Brown.

An espresso express

Drink a coffee to fill with energy and to confront the day with desire but, of course, as the Italians do it: in the bar. You will be able to take an espresso as only 1€ if you do not sit down, even in the most tourist areas of the center of the city.

Route Giulia

To submerge entirely in the ambience it is better to move on foot and to contemplate the groups of tourists, the clergy and the places, always well dressed (and the majority in motorbike!). If it longs to you for a touch of glamor and luxury, go for a walk for Route Giulia (close to the Vatican). Constructed originally by the Pope at the beginning of the XVIth century, this street is full of churches, shops of antiquities and elegant houses.

It has dinner in Termini

To go to eat out in Rome can turn out to be quite expensive, but in the center also there are excellent restaurants at quite reasonable prices. In the secondary streets close to the station Termini (it is guaranteed, this is not the most glamorous area) there are many familiar trattorias and coffees where they serve big plates of pasta or authentic pizzas for a few 6€ (and also, often the bread and the water are included).

Of holiday in Testaccio

In the center, to find a club that is not replete with tourists can be an authentic adventure, since the best holidays are celebrated usually out of the city and it is there where the places go. To be able to enjoy a good night of holiday we recommend to you the Testaccio area. To midnight it begins cheering up and there are places with different music styles, for all the tastes. It is a perfect place to interact with the Italians in his natural habitat.

To sleep in a good cheap hotel

There are many cheap hotels Rome that they are worth it, but some of they are too much far from the center for a weekend visit. That's why we recommend to you The Yellow, a cheap hotel placed to 5 minutes of the station Termini, in the center. This means that you will not have to be dependent on the public transport and will be able to go out until the hour that queráis …

On Sunday

To forget the tourists' tails

To avoid the tails and the price of the entry of the Palatine mount and to see a few better preserved and less well-known ruins, go to Route Appia Antica. Placed just out of the center of the city (to a few minutes in the bus 118 from the metro station Pyramid), this route was the highway that was going from the east coast up to the capital. Along the highway you will find very interesting, included remains a few Christian catacombs and the circus of Maxentio, of which it is possible to see much more compared to the Maximum Circus. The price of the entry is of a few 2€ for every place.

A good aperitif in the evening

In no place of Italy the culture one can see dolce vita better that in Rome, but a cocktail takes in the piazza can be anything expensive. If you travel with an exact budget, you can always choose for a coffee or a bar where they serve aperitivi in the evening with any consumption. One of the options is Obika (close to the Pantheon in Piazza di Firenze), where they serve a small free aperitif with the drink every day between 19:00 and 21:00, like crostini, prosciutto or sweets.

The wonderful Pantheon

Of all the most emblematic places of Rome, the Pantheon wins in originality. After spending 8€ in Proescco and aperitivi in the Obika, you can visit this ancient free church. In the center of the dome there is a óculo that allows to bring in the light of the sun, the rain and some pigeon. To see the sky from the interior is the only experience.

The Pyramid

Another very nice and slightly alternative place to visit in Rome is the Pyramid (metro station B), which also has the added advantage of being isolated from the tourists' radars. The Pyramid Cestia (in Route della Marmorata) was constructed in the 1st century A.D. and his real origins continue without know. Cimitero Acattolico (acquaintance of a not official way as Protestant Cemetery) is very close, in Route Caio Cestio, with some famous "residents" as the English poets John Keats y Percy Bysshe Shelley.

In bicycle

If you have time to go in bicycle for Rome (and you do not scare the traffic), it will be a big advantage since it is one of the best ways of moving for the city. It allows to cover major distances that to be walking but simultaneously there allows the access to these more hidden corners. To rent a bicycle you can go to Town Borghese and enjoy a capuccino in the Caffè delle Arti before beginning the itinerary.
